Chris & Don: A Love Story
Christopher Isherwood, the British-born author whose novel Goodbye to Berlin was the inspiration for the play I Am a Camera and the subsequent musical Cabaret.
Don is Don Bachardy, a portrait artist and much younger man whom Isherwood met on Valentine's Day, 1953. Isherwood died in 1986, but Bachardy still lives in the Santa Monica home the couple, at right in a photo from the early '50s, shared.
He talks about their relationship, intercut with archival footage, home movies and even animations based on the cartoons they used to draw for each other.
The film, a co-presentation with Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival on Dec 10, 2008

Two documentary films by award-winning filmmaker Nancy Nicol will be screened, which capture the victories and struggles for same-sex relationship recognition and marriage in Canada and the United States.

Politics of the Heart (68min, 2005) is a moving portrait of lesbian and gay families who profoundly re-shaped the cultural, political and legal landscape of Quebec and Canada by fighting for recognition of their relationships and their families.

One Summer in New Paltz (54 min, 2008) is a cautionary tale of a young mayor of a small village who decided to do the unthinkable, set against a backdrop of the Bush administration's policy of endless war and assault on civil liberties.

First Annual Nevada Film Festival
Nov 20-22, 2009

www.nevadafilmfestival.com

Winner: Best short film -  "Catching On: The Day the World Turned Gay"
catchingonmovie.wordpress.com

This is a short comedy, run time 21 minutes.

A young man wakes up one morning to find that same sex marriage has become the law of the land. (Oh, no...gays can get married? What will happen next, men marrying animals, furniture or other unsuspecting  objects? Where will it stop?)

Brian (the young man,)  must now deal with the reality of gay marriage sweeping the world. His worries are magnified by his father who is less than happy with the new law. Convinced gays will be everywhere, but still needing milk, Brian's dad sends him to the liquor store.

In the short time it takes to get to the store, (or even out of the apartment building,) gayness spreads like....a plague. It spreads man to man and woman to woman via a nice tight grab of the victim's ass. Yes, that's right get grabbed in the ass and a gay person you will become.

As the plague spreads, show tunes and good taste in decorating spread right along with it.

In it's short run time, this film has more laughs than many full length comedies have. It's clever, it's well written and well acted.

Another plus is that this film is zombie-like!!! Recent zombie films have had their virus spread by the normal everyday infection (Zombieland,) by the human voice (Pontypool,) and via bio-terrorism (Dead Air.) While the voice produced zombies, (really ragers,) is a unique twist, it's nothing compared to the squeeze of the cheek.

"Catching on" is a delightful film. It also has a message that sneaks in while you're laughing..... Don't let the true scary virus spread. The virus that is hatred and bigotry.

The cast and crew worked hard for ten months to produce this film.

Cast: Wayne Fritsche, Will Neely, Tony Wright, Brian O'Hara, Ryan Gillis, Autumn Gillette, Geoff Itz, Dave Itz, Luke Higgins, Marc Griffin, Greg Saniuk, Mark Smolak, Chris Lake, Bobby Aiello, Nick Pistorino, Jim Baker, Gregory Walsh, Rome Romanne, Adrienne Lesser, Sarah Walsh, Jon Thompson, Zachary Egan, Evalena Marie, Courtland Jones, Megan White, Jen Bennett, Tom Ventura, Chuck Pistorino, Mary Schweitzer, Steve Bartholomew.

Written by, Michael Lake
Director, Nick Pistorino
Producer, Chuck Pistorino. Associate Producer, Gregory Walsh
Music, Col McKay, Cinematographer, Sean English. Production designers, Courtland Jones

March 26, 2010 (Friday); 7 to 9 pm
Hillhurst United Church (1227 Kensington Close NW, Calgary)

FISH OUT OF WATER
A documentary exploring the impassioned relationship between Homosexuality and the Bible

The evening will include a screening of the film as well as a panel discussion afterwards, featuring diverse individuals from the community. Admission is free

FISH OUT OF WATER is a genre-bending feature documentary that uses animation and academic interviews to dissect the seven Bible verses used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination.
The film begins with an animated recollection of the fallout at Vanderbilt University when the film’s director, Ky Dickens, came out to her sorority sisters. Their rabid rejection sparks her search for Bible-based condemnation.

The animated elements of this film, complete with a cartoon narrator, make FISH OUT OF WATER a fresh attempt to tackle an old issue. Golden Globe nominee Kaki King has created an original score for this genre-bending work. King’s varied mix of keys, strings and rhythm, flows effortlessly from quirky interviews in barbershops and truck stops, to concept shattering scholarship by leading theologians of today.

Pam Rocker, Co-Project Coordinator for REELS ON WHEELS, Fish Out Of Water is at turns funny and challenging, and always riveting. Whatever your sexual identity, whatever your faith background, this is an issue that affects everyone. It’s important to know what and why people believe what they believe, and this film cleverly takes us on an engaging and accessible journey to further illuminate issues surrounding faith and homosexuality.”

REELS ON WHEELS, a new initiative of Fairy Tales Presentation Society, Calgary’s annual GLBTQ film festival

REELS ON WHEELS mission is to promote diversity education and help build the foundation for safe and supportive environments. We are here to not only further education and awareness on GLBTQ issues, but also to generate discussion that will stimulate, inspire and foster compassion and understanding. Too often, people are marginalized because of differences. We strive to facilitate disarming environments that pair education and entertainment, through film.
