Who’s Talking About the Rhino in the Room?

Rhino in the Room Film Festival is an international queer film festival being held in Lethbridge, Alberta. Rhino in the Room is an opportunity for individuals to express and highlight experiences relating to gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited, and queer people and issues.

Rhino in the Room showcases the incredible diversity of GLBTTQ people, their experiences, and issues in Lethbridge, Southern Alberta, Canada, and internationally.

This type of film festival is a first for Lethbridge. It is an opportunity as a queer community to share our voices and experiences with a larger audience.

One of the goals of the Film Festival is to raise awareness, create understanding, and encourage compassion and support for GLBTTQ people and related issues. There is still a lot of fear and misunderstanding about people and our lives in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. We want to help create a more welcoming and safe environment for GLBTTQ individuals in our community.

Rhino in the Room  Sept 16 to 18, 2009

September 16 Sheila Mcmanus will discuss queer media in “Why The Whole Damn World Needs Queer Artists!” The talk will be held at the University in room PE264 at 7pm and is both completely free and a great way to start off the film festival experience.

September 17 and 18, Rhino in the Room invites you to the Sterndale Bennett Theater (next to the Yates Memorial Centre 910 - 3 Ave S) to come celebrate Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer films.

Tickets are now available for $10 each night, or $15 for both nights.
Tickets may be purchased (cash only) at Blueprint (519 – 4 Ave S), Catwalk (618 3 Avenue South), or at the door.

Each night wil feature different films submitted from around the world. A winner will be showcased and presented at the 2009 Amnesty International Film Festival in Vancouver

Many have asked about the significance behind the name “Rhino in the Room”:

The purple rhino made its first appearance in December 1974. It was created by two Boston gay right activists: one source names Bernie Toal and Tom Morganti, another says it was Bernie Toal and Daniel Thaxton. The entire campaign was intended to bring gay issues further into public view. The rhino started being displayed in subways in Boston, but since the creators didn’t qualify for a public service advertising rate, the campaign soon became too expensive for the activists to handle. The ads disappeared, and the rhino never caught on anywhere else.

As Toal put it, “The rhino is a much maligned and misunderstood animal and, in actuality, a gentle creature.” But when a rhinoceros is angered, it fights ferociously.

At the time, this seemed a fitting symbol for the gay rights movement. RITR has breathed new life into the symbol and put it in the limelight. Lets talk about the rhino in the room!

FREE film screening of “City of Borders”
July 28, 2010 (Wed) ~ 7 to 10 pm
Room PE250, University of Lethbridge

Presented by Rhino in the Room

City of Borders follows the daily lives of the Israeli bar owner and four Israeli and Palestinian patrons as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion, and discrimination to live and love openly. Set against the construction of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in Jerusalem, the stories reveal the contradictions and complexity of the struggle for acceptance.

Rhino in the Room (RITR) Film Festival is a visual space for artists to express and highlight experiences relating to queer issues.

The Lethbridge based festival showcases the incredible diversity of queer issues and artists working in Canada and internationally. We invite you to submit work for consideration.

• We desire films and videos, about or of interest to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgendered, transsexuals and queer individuals.

• We desire work that challenges stereotypes and pre-assigned gender identities,

• We desire work that pokes at and tears away hetero-normal narratives,

• We desire work that pushes boundaries, provokes thought and arouses the senses,

• We desire work that discusses gay rights (adoption, marriage, military, and community) or that chronicles, expresses, relates, and describes human right violations; serious and heartbreaking issues such as bullying, discrimination, harassment, and hate crimes,

• We desire work that expresses and celebrates our lives, loves and desires.

• We desire work that raises awareness, creates understanding, and encourages compassion and
support.

Founded in October of 2008 in a coffee shop in Lethbridge, Rhino in the Room is one of only two annual queer film festivals in Southern Alberta. With a whole bunch of support both locally and globally, this festival is steadily growing and shows a lot of promise for the future

Mission:
To be the rockin-est international queer film festival. Also to provide an opportunity for everyone -regardless of skill set- to share their stories and express themselves through film.
